M. J. Holliday's latest project for the Ghost Getters television show is cut short when one of the cast members, Heath Whitefeather, gets the message that his uncle has been killed. M. J. and Heath are now in a relationship, and she goes with him to New Mexico. Her friend Gillie, who is also part of the crew, reluctantly comes along.
Heath's grandfather, Sam Whitefeather, is M. J.'s spirit guide. He tells her a demon from the Whitefeather family past has been reawakened, with the mission of killing every member of the family. He tells her she must put a stop to it by taking the life of the demon's human host, a task she feels unable to do. When the demon unleashes its full power, taking more lives and sending her and her friends on the run, it becomes more plausible.
She is hampered in her quest by the hostility and suspicion of the people in Heath's pueblo. Outsiders are not welcome in the best of times, but they have a special distrust of Heath, his mother, and his friends that make things even more difficult. It takes more than one encounter with the deadly entity to convince them they need to work with the ghost busters to bring it down.
This is a delightful series, and this entry is especially engaging. The beautiful New Mexico scenery, the glimpses into pueblo life, the flawed but likeable and resilient characters, and one scary and seemingly unbeatable foe all combine into a spine-tingling thrill ride.
This is the sixth volume of the Ghost Hunter Mystery series. The author also writes the Psychic Eye Mystery series. I highly recommend both.
