Unable to solve a high profile murder case, the Belfast police call in Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) from the London MET, to review the case, the investigative procedures utilized, and to make suggestions on how to move the case forward. Gibson quickly realizes there is more to the case than first appeared. She specializes in the psychology of serial killers and believes this case to be linked to a former case and sadly, since no one is willing to listen to her theory, an additional killing that might have been prevented.
Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) appears to be a loving husband and father, however, he preys on women in Belfast. He stalks them, tortures them, and kills them. With each new victim, he refines his method and improves his skill.
The series is fascinating to watch as the two hunters, DSI Gibson and Spector, square off against each other. Despite the viewer knowing the identity of the serial killer from the beginning, there is no lack of suspense. Also, peripheral police matters occasionally intrude upon the investigation but do not detract from the pursuit of the serial killer.
Most thought provoking for me is how the series addresses the issue of how Spector makes the time to stalk his victims, kill them, spend a couple of hours or more with the dead bodies and still have time for his wife and kids. The killings are terrifying enough but the most disturbing part may be how a seemingly normal guy can also be so twisted and warped – a killer with a family.
Series 2 of this Belfast-based crime thriller promises to be even darker, according to reports attributed to Gillian Anderson, who plays DSI Stella Gibson.
