Jillian Hart and Tom Stewart are busy preparing for their wedding and juggling their lives. The last thing they need is another cat in their three cat menagerie, but Tom’s son Finn has his heart set on a sassy tortoiseshell he’d helped care for as a volunteer at the Mercy Animal Sanctuary. When Jillian and Finn arrive at the shelter to pick her up, they learn she has, yet again, made an escape.

A little while later, Jillian is called upon to use her cat-whispering skills to coax a stray out of an old love seat at Ed’s Swap Shop. To no one’s surprise, it is the missing kitty. She has a penchant for purloining shiny and not so shiny objects, a talent for getting into places she shouldn’t be and appropriating items she shouldn’t have. When they see the chain of a gold locket wrapped around her paw, they decide this four-footed kleptomaniac’s name should be Magpie.

More problematic is the blood on her fur, and on the sofa. When Jillian’s best friend and Mercy police officer Candace pokes around the scene, she finds a bullet. Something ominous has happened, and the hunt starts for a body. A search finds it: local construction magnate Rhett Marner is identified by both his ex-wife Rebecca and his present wife Zoe. Complications ensue as the two vie for the title of biggest mourner while seemingly comforting each other.

Tom is a private investigator and former cop. He’s reluctant at first to get involved, but when a second body is found, a man who was a very close friend, he gives it his all. The hunt for the guilty party, or parties, takes some strange and puzzling twists and turns. Family secrets come to light, secrets that impact many lives.

THE CAT, THE SNEAK AND THE SECRET is the seventh book in the delightful Cats in Trouble Mystery series. The small town of Mercy and its citizens come alive on the page. Fans of cozies and cats will enjoy reading the latest adventures of Jillian and her beloved and well-named kitties, Merlot, Syrah, and Chablis. Ms. Sweeney also writes the popular Yellow Rose mysteries. Highly recommended.
