Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) is being held captive in a Chinese prison, scheduled for execution in 24 hours. Nathan Muir (Robert Redford) is a veteran CIA operative. He trained and mentored Bishop. The CIA, of course, couldn't care less if Bishop is executed. It would tidy up the mess he made when he became a "rogue" agent. Muir, on the other hand, is not about to abandon Bishop. In the spy world, where anyone might be your enemy, these two have a special bond, more than just teacher and student.

Things get started off with a "bang" as Bishop launches an unsanctioned raid on a Chinese prison. The "op" fails, leaving Bishop incarcerated in the prison with a looming execution date. The film then unfolds through a series of flashbacks interwoven with Muir's attempts to stage a rescue. The action sequences and the flashback device are well integrated and not too disruptive to the suspense.

Redford and Pitt are well matched. Most of the secondary characters are forgettable, but adequate. They do what character actors are supposed to do, support the story without standing out. The only sour note, for me, was the improbable, and somewhat forced "romance" between Bishop and his lady love (Catherine McCormack).

The plot held together nicely and unlike many spy thrillers these days, the resolution was satisfying, if not probable.
