Kathleen Paulson is a former Boston librarian who accepted a 2-year assignment in Mayville Heights, Minnesota to oversee the renovation of the local library and to organize its centennial celebration. Nearly a year has passed since she arrived and she's unsure if she wants to stay in the small town of Mayville when her contract expires. She misses her family and friends in Boston but she's made friends in Mayville and would miss them if she returned to Boston. She has also been adopted by two special cats; Owen and Hercules. She believes they are semi-feral and would hate living in an apartment in Boston.

Last year Kathleen was a psuedo-suspect in the death of Gregor Eastman. Her friends keep teasing her that she wasn't really a serious suspect because the hunky Detective Marcus Gordon didn't arrest her. They have been trying to hook the two up ever since but Kathleen insists he's not her type. Perhaps if he weren't a policeman... Now there's another body and even though Kathleen wasn't the one who found it, she's the one standing vigil with it when Detective Gordon arrives.

As for Hercules and Owen's special gifts, they are magical cats. One can walk through solid objects like doors, walls, and concrete. The other can become invisible when it suits him. They assist Kathleen in her sleuthing with their unique abilities.

Okay, I know it sounds a bit crazy. Magical cats? I have to give the author due credit. She has fashioned a tale that will please readers whether you believe in magical cats or not. The human characters are well-drawn, the story evenly paced, and Owen and Hercules are endearing. The author has captured their cat personalities perfectly. Cat lovers will love this series! It's a quick, fun read.

This is the second book in A Magical Cats Mystery series, although it's the first book I've read in the series. CURIOSITY THRILLED THE CAT is the first title in the series.
