SEVEN. Starring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt.

Gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride, and lust. "Seven deadly sins. Seven ways to die."

Local critics warned audiences to steer clear of the overly dark, overly grotesque film that has been number one at the box office for three weeks now. (Okay, so when no film is exactly making big bucks, it isn't too difficult to come in number one...)

But the audience sat riveted to their seats during the showing that I attended. And while we all new what was coming in the end, we weren't exactly sure how it was going to happen.

You see, this isn't so much a crime movie (even though it has murder and police detectives in it) as it is a horror film. Of the old fashioned variety. There is not a lot of on-screen violence, but the anticipation is there. The tension is there.

We know soon after the film begins that there are going to be at least seven murders. And we don't see how the police can possibly hope to stop the maniac. We're along for the ride as the two detectives try to unravel the clues the killer is leaving behind.

Morgan Freeman's character is a battle weary city cop, taking retirement in a matter of days. He doesn't want to take on another big case, one that can't possibly be solved, before he leaves. He also doesn't believe his replacement, Brad Pitt's character, is ready for such a gruesome case. Freeman wore his character well. Pitt was less convincing but not jarringly so. And the darkness of the scenes (lack of lighting) underscored the darkness of the horror that was visited upon the victims.

If you go to this movie, it is one that you won't soon forget.
