In the second volume of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Percy, who recently discovered he is the son of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, has just finished a school year in which he didn't get expelled.Well, he almost finishes, but then there is an end-of-school dodgeball game from Hades, involving cannibal giants and explosions, and Percy and his friend Annabeth are on the run once again. On arriving at Camp Half-Blood, they find that all is not well.A sacred tree that guards the campground from harm has been poisoned, and only one thing can save it.That thing is located in the Sea of Monsters, and to retrieve it Percy and his friends must undergo perils that no one has ever survived.

In a series of vivid dreams, Percy learns that his best friend Grover is in terrible trouble involving a wedding gown and a nasty Cyclops. Even though the camp leader has given the Quest to find the magical relic to Percy's nemesis Clarisse, daughter of the god of war, Percy knows he must take part too, to save his friend. Before long, the young campers find themselves between a rock and a hard place, and they all have to learn to get along in order to complete the quest.

Along the way, Percy discovers a long-lost relative and helps a lonely misfit find his way. This is a wonderful adventure story, and Riordan makes the Greek myths come alive.Kids who want to learn more about Percy and Camp Half-Blood will find lots of interactive fun on his website: Highly recommended for kids of all ages.
