SATORI, claims to be "a novel based on Trevanian's SHIBUMI," which might prejudice some readers. I admit I was one of them. SHIBUMI is one of my all time favorite books. I expected to dislike SATORI. I was pleasantly surprised, and hooked on page one.
Tokyo, October 1951. Nicholai Hel is a master assassin, in prison mostly because the U.S. doesn't know what else to do with him, until they need him, that is. Now they have a use for him, but can they orchestrate his cooperation? That remains to be seen as the book progresses.
Fans of spy thrillers and action-adventure novels will find SATORI a deserving and exciting read. Author Don Winslow brings Nicholai Hel to life, as if he created the character in the first place.
This is the first book written by Winslow that I've read. He has written numerous other thrillers. I'm going to have to add them to my "to read" list.
