reporter Harper McClain was twelve when she
found her mother dead on the floor. The case was never solved. Several
months
ago, an anonymous caller warned her that the man who murdered her
mother was
coming for her, but gave her no other information. Taking him
seriously, she
fled to Tybee Island, a sleepy, low crime community, keeping a low
profile and
returning to the city only for work. Months went by with no sign of
trouble,
and she began to wonder if the caller was wrong, or if it was a hoax. When
a neighbor, rock music star Xavier Rayne,
disappeared on the eve of a major tour for his new album, she reached
out to
his housemates, trying to help. The police believe he drowned, and his
friends
thought he’d just run away for a while, as he’d done many times before.
They
were all proved wrong when his body washed ashore days later with two
bullet
holes in it. Sensing the story that could make her career, she dived
into the
investigation, with the approval of the newspaper. That decision proved
dangerous
for her and for Xavier’s friends--would she get a major story, or would
she
lose her life? The
anonymous source resurfaced, asking her to meet
him to learn the truth about her mother’s death. His information about
her
father's early law career and its connection to her mother's murder
shocked her
to the core, making her rethink her whole life. Her search for the
truth about
both her mother’s and Xavier’s murder put her in grave peril, but she
would not
stop until she had her answers. This is a well-plotted thriller, with well-rounded characters and plenty of color and atmosphere from the beautiful city of Savannah. Harper is a flawed but resilient and engaging protagonist. This is the third in the series, after the highly praised THE ECHO KILLING and A BEAUTIFUL CORPSE. Highly recommended.
