Detective Gardner wondered why Annie called a tire shop instead of dialing 911. Then she realized that Annie, knowing she was dying, was afraid she wouldn't have the strength to talk.

So Annie left the police a clue to her killer's identity. Using the letters on the phone, Annie dialed her killer's name.

Since there is no Q on a phone dial, and since Z is often missing or on 0, which would get the operator, Annie could not dial Quincey or Zellman. She must have dialed Roberts.
