J. P. Beaumont is not adjusting to retirement as well as he thought would. After years of police work fraught with danger he finds idleness frustrating. When retired crime reporter Maxwell Cole dies in an apparently accidental fire, Beaumont becomes involved with the investigation at the request of the dead man. He discovers an adversary from an old case is determined to seek revenge.
I have a soft spot for J. P. Beaumont books. The first mystery/suspense book I can recall reading (not counting spy novels) was UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY, the first J. P. Beaumont book. I was first attracted to the book because of its Seattle setting. However, it was the author’s writing skills that won me over.
Jance is one of those somewhat rare writers who are consummate story-tellers. The elements of setting, characterization, plot, pacing, and intriguing mystery/crime scenarios come together and compel the reader to immerse themselves in Beaumont’s life and career. Each J. P. Beaumont book is like catching up with a cherished old friend whom you haven’t seen in awhile.
Though I have read most of the books in her Joanna Brady series and the Ali Reynolds series, the J. P. Beaumont series continues to be my favorite and J. A. Jance continues to be one of my favorite authors.
J. A. Jance is the author of the J. P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, the Ali Reynolds series, and five interrelated thrillers about the Walker family.
