An ensemble cast makes this series one of my favorites. There is something, and someone, here for practically every viewer. Mark Harmon (Special Agent Jethro Gibbs) and Michael Weatherly (Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo) are many, if not most, people's favorites but I'm partial to Pauley Perrette (forensic expert Abby Sciuto), David McCallum (medial examiner Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard), Sean Murray (Special Agent Timothy McGee), and Cote de Pablo (Officer Ziva David).

NCIS: the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (the original, full title of the series) was inspired by the real unit, of the same name, which provides the framework for the series. The team investigates crimes committed by or against Navy and Marine personnel and their dependents. Murder, kidnapping, fraud, terrorism and many other crimes bring the team into action.

With such a long-running series, there are bound to be episodes that are stronger or weaker than others. Nevertheless, as a whole, the series is well written and well acted. A bit of confusion may be experienced if viewing the series on TV because the episodes are not always shown in chronological order. The biggest problem with watching out of sequence episodes on TV is that there are several longish story arcs during which major things happen to some of the main characters, including death. It feels strange to watch an episode with a main character whom you know died in a later episode.

Initially I watched a few episodes on TV then purchased the entire collection and watched the episodes in proper order. If you aren't sure you want to purchase the entire collection, you could start with season one or rent the episodes from your favorite DVD service.
