Constable Hamish Macbeth is feeling sorry for himself. He is under the weather and cannot go to his parents' place for Christmas. Jane Wetherby, who owns a secluded island health farm, offers Hamish a working holiday.

Jane believes someone is trying to harm her, perhaps even kill her, and she wants Hamish to find out who is responsible. Hamish thinks she is balmy and sees the opportunity as a free vacation.

The island holiday soon turns deadly, when a woman goes missing and is found murdered. Hamish is now faced with a dilema, as all the guests have an alibi: they were all together when the dead woman was murdered.

M.C. Beaton tends to get rid of the troublemakers early in her books, which make them an enjoyable read.
