Hugh Quint has came home to Tylerton,Vermont. He has left the big city of Boston where he was a police detective. Hugh is now a private detective in this cozy little town.

Early in the maple season Amos Reed, a maple syrup maker calls on Hugh to come and help him cook down his syrup. Hugh is delighted as he enjoys helping the cranky old man. Amos has an on going feud with Benj Carver, a maple syrup maker whose land just happens to border on his.

Hugh is with Amos when a man is found strangled on Benj's land. Amos feels that the Sheriff suspects him and asks Hugh to check things out. Soon another body turns up and the syrup is not the only thing that is thickening in Tylerton.

Tylerton is a small community where everyone knows everyone, and their family. The whole community is running scared.

When I first picked up this book the language on the first few pages seemed forced or hard for me to read. But soon I found myself becoming more comfortable with the New England prose and found the book to be quite educational as well as entertaining. I am glad I did not let the first few pages stop me as I would have missed the rather shocking conclusion.
