LESTRADE AND THE MAGPIE continues Lestrade's adventures in the usual fashion. In 1920, Superintendent Lestrade has now "retired," leaving Scotland Yard after a scandal forced out a top man Lestrade felt had been dismissed unfairly.

Now Lestrade is on his own. When faced with the murder of his daughter's fiance (a man everyone had thought killed during The Great War), Lestrade goes undercover, with the help of his daughter, to solve the mystery.

Along the way, more murders, done in similar fashion crop up. Lestrade tangles with the IRA, with Scotland Yard and Special Branch, the War Office, and a movie studio, calling in old friends and old favors as he races about England trying to track down the killer. Lestrade's daughter, Emma, just as resourceful as and slightly more competent than her father, accompanies him closely.

The story follows Trow's usual formula, but as usual, it manages to convey an undercurrent of dark emotion beneath Lestrade's antics. I liked Emma being part of the story, and liked how Lestrade, the dogged policeman, carefully uncovers facts piece by piece.

Reading each Lestrade novel is like revisiting old friends. You see more pieces of Lestrade's life, but as usual, Trow doesn't let you have the whole thing directly. In spite of the puns, pure silliness, and formulaic plot, Lestrade comes off as a three-dimensional character, a man you want to learn more about. Fortunately, there's nine other Lestrade novels, and probably more to come!

This is volume 10 in the series.
