New York City in 2059 is not so very different than today. Cars can avoid traffic jams by going vertical, flights to Europe are a bit shorter, people still walk dogs in Central Park, and serial killers continue to ply their trade. Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas, dressed to kill for a social evening with her tycoon hubby Roarke, is called away from a corporate dinner in Chicago to investigate a murder in the City, and gets there in no time at all. She finds the mutilated body of a young woman, naked except for a red ribbon around her neck, carefully posed by the lake in Central Park. This is only the first of a series, and as the killer escalates the violence Eve races the clock to stop his deadly spree. She receives help from an unexpected, and at first unwanted, source, when a psychic more used to telling the futures of bored socialites begins to have visions of the murders as they occur.
This is the 19th book in the "...in Death" series, written by Nora Roberts as J.D. Robb, and the first I've read. I was so impressed by it that I immediately went out and bought the first book, NAKED IN DEATH.
Eve is a flawed character who rises above a horrendous childhood to become an excellent, committed police detective. She has an interesting support system of friends and co-workers and a healthy relationship with Roarke -- a relationship that began in the first book when he was a suspect in another serial killer case.
Robb has meticulously created a believable world in the not-so-distant future, and I am definitely looking forward to learning more about that world, and the ongoing adventures of Eve Dallas and her wonderfully colorful circle of friends.
