This movie is a mess.

The action scenes and chase scenes are way too long and feel as if we’ve seen them before only this time; they’re not so well done. The plot is weak, at best. How much more of a secret past can Jason Bourne have? And how much more does he need to know about it? (Certainly more than I care to know about.) I get it. There are lots of bad guys in positions that should only have good guys. The CIA is corrupt – or at least the people Bourne is dealing with are. No one can be trusted. Okay, I get that too.

I understand that this type of movie is formulaic. I don’t mind that as long as it’s done well. This one isn’t, in my opinion. It was boring, poorly cast – Tommy Lee Jones looks way too old. Had he been a bit younger, as in his “Fugitive” days then yes, he would have added a nice touch to the Bourne movie. As it was, he not only detracted from the movie, he looked as if he might die at any moment but that is not the character image the movie was going for. Julia Stiles’ acting ability was wasted and her character made to look silly or stupid.

Except to try and make oodles more money for the franchise, there was no reason to make this movie. The first three movies featuring Matt Damon as Jason Bourne were good, solid action/thriller movies  and complete enough for most, if not all fans.  They bear repeated viewing. This movie, Jason Bourne, was barely watchable. Quite frankly, if I were Matt Damon, I would be embarrassed to have made this movie. However, I imagine there are a significant number of die-hard fans who gleefully watched this movie and it would not surprise me if the franchise eventually decides to have another go at a Bourne movie.

Movies in the Jason Bourne series: The Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum all starring Matt Damon. The Bourne Legacy (starring Jeremy Renner).
