Van Shaw is a former Army Ranger with the impressive skills set that go with that training. Before the Army, when he was younger, he dabbled in a bit of crime…B&E, GTA, grand larceny…another valuable skills set. The latter skills were taught to him by his grandfather.

Willard, an old crony of Dono, Van’s recently deceased grandfather, asks a favor. He wants Van to check up on his niece, Elana, who hasn’t shown up for work two nights in a row. As far as Willard knows, she is in a cabin on the Olympic Peninsula with her boyfriend.

What Van finds after trekking to the cabin is disturbing. From there, things move swiftly in a dangerous direction for Van.

This is the second book in the series featuring Shaw. It’s a well executed action-packed thriller. Shaw is a flawed character but not overly so.

I like the author’s gritty, first person narrative writing style though I was first drawn to the book because of its Seattle, Washington area setting. I look forward to more books in this series and wonder why no one has made a movie or TV series based on this intriguing character.

Other books in this series: PAST CRIMES.
