BLOOD IS THE SKY
By Steve Hamilton
Thomas Dunne Books, 2003 ($21.95)
Reviewed by Rick McMahan
I never knew the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was ripe with so much crime and mystery until I started reading Steve Hamilton. Hamilton has justly won an Edgar for his Alex McKnight mysteries. Former minor league baseball player, former husband, and former Detroit cop, Alex McKnight is the owner of a series of rental cabins in Paradise, Michigan. And sometimes, Alex becomes a reluctant Detective.
In BLOOD IS THE SKY, Alex is asked by his best friend, Vinnie LeBlanc to help him on a personal problem. LeBlanc is an Ojibwa Indian and hunting guide. In the spirit of brotherly love, Vinnie allowed his felon brother to use his identification to take a hunting party into Canada. However, his brother, nor the hunters have returned. Vinnie canít go to the authorities without getting his brother into trouble with the law, but heís worried enough to ask his friend Alex to go with him into the heart of Canada and track his brother down.
For a unique mystery series set away from the urban sprawl, give Steve Hamiltonís series a read.
