The team of the ghost hunting Ghoul Getters has a plum assignment: a castle in northern Wales. The setting is magnificent, teaming with spirits, spooky corridors, hidden staircases, even a moat and drawbridge. There's one problem. M. J. Holliday's best friend and crew member Gilley is acting up big time. On the list of Things That Give Gilley the Weirds is ghosts. This makes it inconvenient for his job performance and for his co-workers' sanity. Only the presence of a handsome photographer working on a fashion shoot at the castle calms him down somewhat.
There's nothing friendly about the ghosts the team encounters in Kidwellah Castle. The Grim Widow, the resident chief spirit, takes two lives before the film crew can even get their equipment set up, and takes M. J. and her boyfriend Heath Whitefeather for a near-fatal swim in the moat. Inspector Lumley, who is investigating the deaths, believes the killers are flesh and blood, but as events unfold he becomes less skeptical about the power of the supernatural. Along the way he gains respect for the team, and solves a family mystery, finding comfort and closure in the process.
The gang has never faced a more ferocious ghoul, and all their weapons and skills may not be enough to keep them safe. They try to call off the job, but their producer keeps pushing them to carry on, or else. Luckily, they have friends on the other side to help them with the job.
This is the seventh Ghost Hunter mystery. With each new adventure, the danger seems to increase, as well as the level of enjoyment for the reader. The setting is perfect for a good ghost hunt, and the characters are all engaging, although Gilley was so childish at times I wanted to shake him. He did redeem himself by the end of the book, however, and in future he may even grow up and settle down. M. J. and Heath, too, are entering a new stage in their relationship. I look forward to seeing where the Ghoul Getters end up next.
