LESTRADE AND THE GUARDIAN ANGEL
By M. J. Trow

Regnery Press, Hardcover, 224 pages, (December, 1999) $19.95

Reviewed by J. Ashley (11/99)

It's the late 1890s, a few years after Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and Lestrade finds himself once again investigating a series of murders. First, an Army officer is found dead with a medal jammed between his teeth. Next, Lestrade's old friend, Harry Bandicoot, sends for him when an archeologist is found dead with a scarab stuck between his teeth. Several more murders follow, and Lestrade gets out his shoeboxes of notes and goes to work. What kind of serial killer is he facing, and what connects the victims?

The investigation forces Sholto Lestrade to take on a series of disastrous disguises: a cavalry officer, an ardent cyclist, an expert balloonist. Each paves the way for some hilarious (though often predictable) moments. Doctor Watson features in this story as a sympathetic, if bumbling character who turns to Lestrade for help.

This book also introduces Lestrade's daughter (here three years old), and touches on Lestrade's grief for his recently deceased wife. I like the way Trow paints Lestrade as both a comic and a tragic figure. Lestrade becomes neither, and both.

This is Volume VIII in the series, and as enjoyable as the other three I've had the pleasure of reading. I look forward to the next. How many murders will Lestrade have to solve? How many women will seduce him? Will Lestrade ever pay his own cab fare? And will Dew ever make a good cup of tea?

Other books in the series include: THE ADVENTURES OF INSPECTOR LESTRADE, BRIGADE: FURTHER ADVENTURES OF LESTRADE, LESTRADE AND THE BROTHER OF DEATH, LESTRADE AND THE DEADLY GAME, LESTRADE AND THE HALLOWED HOUSE, LESTRADE AND THE LEVIATHAN, LESTRADE AND THE RIPPER, THE MANY FACES OF JACK THE RIPPER, MAXWELL'S HOUSE, THE SUPREME ADVENTURES OF INSPECTOR LESTRADE, and to be published in 2000, LESTRADE AND THE GIFT OF THE PRINCE.
