A Peter Diamond Investigation (Book 19 of 19)
Reviewed by Shirley Wetzel
The Other Half, Bath’s springtime half/marathon, is an event Detective Peter Diamond usually gives little thought to. This year, however, the terror threat in Bath has just been elevated to Violent, and he’s been assigned to crowd control on the day. As he watches the participants go by, he’s stunned to see a man he’d sent to prison a decade ago. There was every reason to believe the man would pull some of his old tricks, and Diamond means to stop him.
Two Albanian men escape from the brutal manager of an illegal alien work group, and show up for the race because they’d heard there would be goody bags full of food for the participants. With luck, the two might be able to grab one. They get a lot more than they’d expected, not all good.
Several months earlier, school teacher Maeve Kelly was perfectly happy to be a couch potato. A series of events led her to reluctantly enter the race. By the time it arrives, she’s become a real contender for, at least, finishing the half marathon, and she’s found a new sweetheart who seems too good to be true.
Their paths collide at The Other Half race in ways unexpected, complicated, and for some, deadly. Diamond and his team follow the clues through the roads and fields and even into treacherous underground coal tunnels. THE FINISHER, like all the Peter Diamond mysteries, is a fine police procedural enriched by Bath’s colorful history and beauty.
Mr. Lovesey’s first novel, WOBBLE TO DEATH, was published fifty years ago. Since then, he has written forty novels and six short story compilations. Like that first novel, running is the subject of THE FINISHER. Peter Lovesey is a giant among mystery writers. He is one of only three living authors to receive both the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master award and the Crime Writers Association Diamond Dagger for Lifetime Achievement. Highly recommended.
