Rich Evans is a big city guy (New York City, to be exact) detailed to a small (make that “tiny”) town in Alberta, Canada tasked with saving a floundering new hotel, the Whitewater Lodge. His predecessor vanished without a trace. Rich would like to get back to the city as soon as possible and the locals, or most of them, want to run him out of town. They seem to be particularly hostile towards him. Ominously, things become even more unsettling after a series of gruesome murders. Rich is short on allies and he worries that he may be the killer’s next target.

Setting a thriller in the rugged Alberta countryside adds a palpable eeriness and urgency to the story. The Canadian Rockies setting is so aptly described it becomes a fully realized character of its own.

The pacing is good; fast enough to hold a reader’s interest yet slow enough to allow the tension to develop, with time enough to savor the surroundings. The characters are well drawn and memorable.

I do hope the author is busy writing another suspenseful tale!

D. K. Stone writes novels for both adults (THE INTAGLIO SERIES, EDGE OF WILD, and CTRL Z) and teens (ICARUS and ALL THE FEELS).
