Former army lieutenant E. J. Ferris is now working as a mall cop since she injured a knee while on military service. Her job usually involves making sure people get to their cars safely, dealing with a couple of shoplifters, reporting any maintenance service that may be needed, and other similar tasks. However, that specific day, she had something new to do: collect all the specimens that had been released from the Herpetology Hut and that were now spread throughout the mall before the doors opened to the general public. When E. J. hears a scream, she thinks maybe one of the early-morning walkers has found the python or some other scary reptile close to her, but imagine her surprise when she finds out that the woman was actually screaming at a mannequin in a boutique...(Did I tell you the mannequin was in fact, a naked corpse of a man who evidently had just been murdered?) E. J. is determined to look into the homicide and help the police in charge, and with the help of her grandfather — who is an ex-CIA agent — she actually ends up solving the case.

This is a very nice first-in-the-series book, which will keep you guessing all the way through. Characters are very well developed and the images of the mall are so vivid that you actually feel you have been there before. Whether you are a shopaholic or just a mystery lover, once you finish the book you'll find yourself eager to go on to the next one!
