lawyer Andy Carpenter’s wife Laurie
Collins loves Christmas, especially the giving aspect. Every business
in
Paterson, New Jersey puts up Christmas trees during the season where
people in
need place letters containing their dearest wishes. Laurie frequently
fulfills
all the wishes. They are all poignant and touching, but this year one
stands
out. A little boy named Danny has three wishes. The first two are
simple: a
coat for his mother; a sweater for his dachshund Murphy. The third is
not so easily
fulfilled. Danny’s father is on the run after being accused of a crime
he did
not commit. Andy and Laurie investigate and discover that Dad does not
want to
be found. In order to fulfill Danny’s dearest wish, they need to find
out who
really committed the murder fourteen years ago.
Laurie,
a Paterson police lieutenant, Andy, and
their canine companions, Tara the golden retriever and Sebastien the
basset
hound join forces with Patterson police officer Corey Douglas and his
K-9
partner Simon Garfunkel to try to bring about a Christmas miracle. There
is a lot to love about Andy, Laurie, and their
band of kooky compatriots, human and canine. The plot contains plenty
of twists
and turns and all the characters are believable and realistic. The
dogs, with their
unique personalities and special talents, add warmth and fun to the
story:
well, Sebastien’s special talent is being able to sleep anywhere and
anytime,
but he has his merits. Recommended for fans of cozy mysteries, dog lovers, and those who enjoy a gentle, non-gory, well-written novel.
