Forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan (Tempe to her friends) returns in the eighth novel of this series. The doctor usually divides her time between Charlotte, NC and Quebec, Canada. This time out she ends up in Israel, investigating the suspicious death of Avram Ferris, an Orthodox Jewish man whose putrified body awaited Dr. Brennan's anthropologial expertise in the morgue. Due to the decomposed state of the body, the police needed her to determine if foul play was involved or if the man had commited suicide.

When a stranger delivers a photo of a skeleton, from an archealogical dig, to Dr. Brennan, claiming it is the key to the victim's death, Tempe becomes involved in an international mystery of "biblical proportions," as the old saying goes.

Normally I am a fan of Ms. Reichs but I was very disappointed with this novel.

I found the numerous "nods" to THE DA VINCI CODE, boring and annoying. I get it, I get it. I haven't even read THE DA VINCI CODE and I get it. Also, I much prefer the early writings of Faith Kellerman when it comes to Jewish people and their culture. I have previously complained about too many unexplained (to my satisfaction) French words and phrases in the books, but that is more my own problem than the author's. I don't speak French and have no interest in learning it or looking up the words and phrases I don't understand. My problem. I'm lazy when it comes to French. But I did expect a better story line from Ms. Reichs. I hope she will be back on track in the next book.

If you are not already a die-hard fan of Ms. Reichs, I'd suggest waiting until the paperback version is released. CROSS BONES is scheduled to be available in paperback format from PocketStar Books on May 23, 2006. You may pre-order this title now.

Titles in this series include: DEJA DEAD, DEATH DU JOUR, DEADLY DECISIONS, FATAL VOYAGE, GRAVE SECRETS, BARE BONES, MONDAY MOURNING, and CROSS BONES.
