I've said this before, but it bears repeating. Do yourself a favor. When you go to the bookstore to pick up a copy of this book, pick up a copy of all of Walters' other books. It will save you a lot of time, especially if you finish this one late at night and are desperate to read something else she's written. Each book I read from this author becomes my favorite, for the moment. Now that I've read four of them, I'd be hard pressed to choose only one as my favorite.

For some readers, the storyline may seem too horrendous to even consider, yet fans of psychological suspense won't be able to put the book down once they begin reading. It almost seems like something you might have read in last night's newspaper or heard the gruesome details on the evening news, just as you were settling down to dinner after a long day at work.

A woman is brutally raped and murdered -- sounds like the evening news, doesn't it? Her young daughter is found nearby. There are supsects, including the dead woman's husband. Still sounds like the evening news, doesn't it? Is the husband telling the truth? Was he away on business? Was his wife as respectable as he wants everyone to believe? And what about the traumatized little girl?

I could almost swear I heard a newscast about a crime like this only a few weeks ago. Unfortunately in our society, this type of horrendous crime is becoming all too common place. It isn't even reserved for the late-night news broadcast anymore.

Yet, Ms. Walters is such an outstanding storyteller that even though I hesitated to start reading The Breaker because of the nature of the crime, the first paragraph intrigued me and within six pages, I was hooked. I had to read on.
