BONES TO ASHES
By Kathy Reichs
Scribner, August 2007 ($25.95)

This is the tenth entry in the popular forensic series featuring Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, who divides her time and skills between Montreal, Canada and Charlotte, North Carolina, as does the author.
In BONES TO ASHES the discovery of a young girl's skeleton brings back haunting childhood memories for Tempe. When she was eight years old, her best friend suddenly disappeared. Tempe was told not to look for her, to just forget her. Is it a coincidence that the skeleton was found in Acadia, the same place her best friend had come from thirty years ago?
Meanwhile, Detective Ryan is investigating a series of cold cases. Three dead girls and four missing. Is the young girl's skeleton connected to these girls?
As always, Reichs deftly combines science and suspense for a tale that will keep readers turning pages long after their bedtime. I can't imagine anyone who enjoys reading Patricia Cornwall's Kay Scarpetta series not liking Tempe. I think the storyline and writing far outshines any other forensic thrillers currently available.
For those who also enjoy their mysteries on TV, Reichs's character is the inspiration for the FOX TV series "Bones," starring Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan. Check local listings for details. The show is currently scheduled Tuesday nights, 8 p.m. (USA). Reichs is listed as one of the producers and shares writing credits for several episodes. I haven't watched the show yet so I can't comment on how well it fits with the books but from the chatter on the internet and blogs, the viewers seem to like the show.
