Janet Dawson is back! Well, Jeri Howard (the series character) and Janet Dawson (the author) are both back. This is the 10th book in the series, I believe. Long-time fans will be thrilled with a new Jeri Howard novel. First time readers can jump right into the series with BIT PLAYER and pick up all the background on Jeri they need, as the story unfolds.
Jeri Howard is a P.I. in Oakland, California. Her lastest investigation involves an unsolved murder from 1942, the "Golden Age of Hollywood," and a present day mystery. Both cases have their roots in a movie memorabilia shop. Jeri's grandmother (before she married) was a bit player (an actress with only a few lines) in several movies. She may also have been a suspect in the murder of a British actor who was in Hollywood at the time. Rumors were that the two of them were an "item" until a messy break up. On the present day investigation, Jeri wonders if old movie posters are worth killing for?
The best thing about a Jeri Howard book is that the author gets everything right...characters, dialogue, setting, pacing, plenty of twists and turns, with a well-plotted storyline. In my opinion, her writing is second only to the early writings of J. A. Jance (but a very close second).
Other titles in this series: KINDRED CRIMES, TILL THE OLD MEN DIE, TAKE A NUMBER, DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN, NOBODY'S CHILD, A CREDIBLE THREAT, WITNESS TO EVIL, WHERE THE BODIES ARE BURIED, and A KILLING AT THE TRACK. There is also a collection of short stories, SCAM AND EGGS.
