First off, with a title like WHEN BUNNIES GO BAD how can you not want to read this book?!?

Secondly, Clea Simon is a former journalist and is the author of the Pru Marlowe, Dulcie Schwartz, and Theda Krakow animal mystery series, as well as three nonfiction books but this is the first book I have read by this author.

Pru Marlowe has a “sensitivity” to animals – not in the sense of an allergy – she can hear what they are thinking. They don’t speak out loud to her or in complete sentences – that might mean she had mental issues like in “crazy as a loon” – she just hears or senses what they are thinking.

While trying to deal with Henry, an unruly wild rabbit an 84-year-old woman is illegally harboring in her home, Pru must also deal with a ski-bunny (of the human variety) whose “sugar-daddy” has just been snuffed out and for which the ski-bunny is the prime suspect.

I adore well written mysteries with animal characters and their human companions. I also like mysteries with a bit of supernatural or psychic elements so I was doubly pleased to finally discover this “pet noir” series!

I fell in love with Pru, the featured human character in this series, by the middle of the first sentence on page one. I like a spunky protagonist who likes animals better than people. By the end of the first chapter, I was turning the pages (and reading, of course) as fast as I could manage. The arthritis in my fingers slowed me down a bit but the feisty Pru was a hoot and I couldn’t put the book aside until I had reached the final page.

Written in the first person, this writing style may be off-putting initially to some readers not accustomed to it – I prefer it – but perseverance will be rewarded. I look forward to the next installment in this series, plus I have some catching up to do. This is book six in the series but my first to read.

I don’t mind reading a series out of order so I think Book #5 KITTENS CAN KILL (2015) and Book #2 CATS CAN’T SHOOT (2012) will be next on my list of Pru Marlowe Pet Noir mysteries.
