ASHES AND BONES:
An Emma Fielding Mystery
By Dana Cameron
Avon, August, 2006 ($6.99)
Reviewed by Cherie Jung
Emma Fielding is an archaeologist. Her life seems to be perfect. She has a loving husband, a beautiful home in New England, and a position at a respected university. She is also the victim of a cunning enemy who seeks the ruination of her career, her reputation, and her life. Emma knows who is terrorizing her, unfortunately, everyone else believes the culprit to already be dead. She is left to fend for herself with little chance of rescue from anyone else.
I guess this fits into the "women in jeopardy" style thriller. (Not that there's anything wrong with that style. I read them and enjoy them, but they're not everyone's "cup of tea," are they?) Is Emma being hounded by a killer, and is that killer her former colleague, Tony Markham? He did try to kill her before. But he's supposed to be dead. Or is he? Is someone else after Emma? Or are these escalating pranks something else?
This is the first book featuring Emma Fielding that I have read. I was able to jump right in and quickly pick up what background I needed from the author and fully engage myself in this storyline. I think most other readers will be able to do the same.
I enjoyed the writing style. Crisp, intelligent, with lots of twists and turns. I liked Emma, she's smart. I liked the secondary characters. I liked the story. I will certainly look forward to future adventures with Emma.
This is the sixth book in the Emma Fielding series. Other titles include: SITE UNSEEN, GRAVE CONSEQUENCES, PAST MALICE, A FUGITIVE TRUTH, and MORE BITTER THAN DEATH.
