LESTRADE AND THE MIRROR OF MURDER
Regnery (A Gateway Mystery), 2001
Reviewed by Jennifer Ashley
Lestrade is back again in yet another funny and thoughtful adventure. This time, our superintendent is called to Devon to investigate the death of a captain who died in a carriage accident, caused by someone cutting the harness. The result: one man and his three nieces, dead. Lestrade finds a strange clue--a small broken mirror in a crudely carved frame, which had been placed in the dead man's pocket.
As the story goes on, Lestrade is called to investigate more murders, all seemingly unconnected but for the small broken mirror found near or on the body. Lestrade uncovers facts here and there to point to Abyssinia and events twenty years in the past.
Amid puns and double-entendres (not all of which our hero understands), Sholto Lestrade uses straightforward police work and overtime at the office to investigate and solve the crimes. As in most Lestrade books, the whodunit was fairly obvious (although I did not guess why or figure out a couple of the twists at the end).
Fans of Lestrade will enjoy this installment. The year is 1906, and our heart goes out to the lonely, sad man plodding through his job during the hot summer days. (Conan Doyle pops up briefly in this one.)
When life gets you down, you can always read a Lestrade.
